Joy. She liked the way her name flowed from his lips. As if it was meant to. Of course, that was utter absurdity because she was nothing but a farmer’s daughter and a lowly companion to his mother. Not to mention, she had done things that would probably make him turn around and run the other way as fast as he could. Good girls didn't do the things she'd been forced to do.

And in a flash, her elation of riding Ladiesman, no less, was disappearing into the mist.

“Why do you help the slaves?”

He drew in a sharp breath and glanced around, as if he were afraid that someone might overhear them.

“I suppose it’s something I can do to help the evil that has plagued our great nation for so long.”

Their horses walked along, both prancing slightly.

“I think it’s noble.”

Andrew gave her a soft smile. “No. I simply chose to use what God has given me to help those less fortunate. But let’s not talk about it anymore. Tell me about your farm.”

She was struggling with the stallion, who wanted to go much faster than a subdued walk.

“It's not big. We have twelve acres.”

“Brothers? Sisters?” Andrew yanked Minuteman's head away from Ladiesman's neck. The older stallion was ready to take a chunk out of the chestnut.

“Sister,” she panted. “She's younger than me. I... fear for her safety.”

“Is there anything I can say to make you stay here?”

Oh... “I need to go.”

“Can you please not run away again in the middle of the night?”

She gave him a furtive glance. “Only if we can pick up the pace.”

Andrew grinned and Joy leaned against her horse's pull. Ladiesman was doing everything to make her loosen her grip on the reins, allowing him to shoot past Minuteman. She wasn't about to let him. Not with the race coming up.

Their pace increased to a fast trot. Ladiesman tossed his head and snorted in pleasure. His ears twitched back and forth in the rhythm of his stride. The leather creaked and the metal from the stirrups clinked. All the sounds were absorbed by the mist.

Soon, the horses weren't satisfied with a mere trot. They picked up a canter along the muddy road. Their legs were soon splattered with thick mud.

“Slow down.” Andrew tugged hard on Minuteman's reins. “This is going to turn into an all-out race.”

The stallion flattened his ears against his head and ignored him. Up ahead was the bend that led down to the shore, past the lighthouse.

“I can't stop him.”

Andrew leaned back and hauled on the reins. Minuteman only slowed down for a stride, grabbed the bit between his teeth and pinned his ears.

Joy sat deep in the saddle, using her body to haul Ladiesman back. He obeyed, but only until Minuteman shot past him. Then he shook his head and pinned his ears. He hopped on his hind legs and shot off after the leading stallion. Soon, they were going all out toward the lighthouse. Her hair came free of her pins, tears ran down her cheeks.
